Digital subscriptions with family plans

[ad_1]

Current economy or not, we’re always looking for better deals and more ways to save. So, did you know that some of your digital subscription services offer family plans which may be worth checking out? For larger families or groups of six, the savings are substantial.

Storage for Android and iOS

The cost of fibre is coming down, and the cost of physical storage on smartphones is increasing. So it makes sense to go for a lower storage device, and supplement with cloud storage. Whether you’re on Android or iOS, both operating systems offer family plans.

The Apple One Family plan is bundled with its Music, TV, Arcade, and iCloud+, and allows five other people to have private access to each service across their devices. A 200GB account costs R44.99 a month, and the 2TB tier costs R149.99 per month (R25 each for six people).

Google One’s cloud storage can also be shared with five other people, and can be used across its services (Gmail, Photos, Drive, etc). A standard 200GB account is R39 a month, and a 2TB premium account costs R159 a month (R26.50 each for six people).

Music streaming

When it comes to music streaming for large households, family plans make the most financial sense. Spotify Premium for an individual costs R59 a month and a Duo account costs R79. But a Family account for up to six people costs only R99 a month (R16.50 each).

YouTube Premium (which includes YouTube Music) provides that elite, ad-free experience. For one person this costs R71.99 a month, whereas a Family plan costs R109.99 for up to six people (R18.33 each).

Microsoft 365

Microsoft 365 (formerly Office 365), is a digital subscription service that provides full access to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams. This, along with 1TB of storage on OneDrive will cost one person R999 a year/R99 a month for home use.

A home family plan for up to six people offers access to all these apps, as well as 1TB of storage for each person, at a cost of R1,299 a year/R129 a month. Business plans are available separately, starting at R92,50 a month per person.

TV subscriptions

When it comes to streaming TV, we’ve read about Netflix clamping down on password sharing, and DStv is outright limiting its streaming services to one device.

That said, Netflix Premium costs R199 a month and allows four concurrent streams. Showmax Standard costs R99 a month and allows two concurrent streams, and Disney+ costs R119 a month and allows four concurrent streams.

Kindle and Audible

Did you know that Amazon’s Kindle and Audible service can be used with Family Library? The lesser-known lending service allows two adult Amazon accounts to be linked so that digital content can be shared, such as e-books, audiobooks, apps, and games.

Adults can also share Amazon Video, Amazon Music, and Twitch Prime with teens in their household, while children can access certain books, games, and apps. Parents have full control over kids’ accounts.

Do note that if an e-book is loaned out, the borrower has 14 days to read it, during which the primary account holder will not have access. So this probably won’t work for book clubs.

Even if you don’t have a large family, most of these services can be used between a group of friends. Digital subscription costs add up, so if you’re serious about budgeting this is well worth considering.
